WHAT TO GET RIGHT
Rules that shape Washington, DC stores in 2026.
What a store selling from the District has to handle — and what we set up by default.
Privacy
The District has no comprehensive privacy law yet; Virginia’s VCDPA and Maryland’s MODPA apply to many DMV sellers. We set up consent and opt-outs that satisfy all of them.
Tax-exempt and institutional buyers
Exemption certificates, purchase orders and net terms configured so finance teams stop emailing you.
Accessibility (ADA and Section 508)
WCAG 2.1 AA by default — essential for nonprofits and anyone selling to government-adjacent buyers.

MORE OF OUR WORK
From local businesses to national DTC brands.
06
Why Washington, DC, specifically
DC-area clients are rarely pure DTC brands. They are associations selling memberships and publications, nonprofits running donations and events, government contractors with a product line, and Northern Virginia and Maryland consumer brands that happen to be headquartered near the capital.
Shopify handles all of these better than most people expect, if it is set up for them: memberships and recurring billing through subscription apps, donation flows with proper receipts, event tickets, B2B portals with purchase orders and net terms, and the accessibility and privacy standards that associations and contractors are held to. We have built that combination for churches, foundations and member organisations elsewhere and apply the same checklist here.
Forest is three and a half hours from the District, so in-person work is planned rather than casual — kickoff, launch and one review a quarter. Everything else runs in Eastern time, which for DC teams used to agencies in other time zones is often the first thing they notice.

4 questions
Do you work with nonprofits?
Yes — donations, memberships, events and merch are a large share of our work.
Can you handle tax-exempt buyers and purchase orders?
Yes. Shopify can mark customers as tax-exempt, and B2B on Shopify Plus supports company accounts, payment terms and purchase-order numbers at checkout. We set up the flow your buyers' procurement teams expect.
Will you come to DC?
Yes, by arrangement. Projects can include on-site days in DC, Arlington or Bethesda for kickoff and launch.
What does a DC store build cost?
Store builds start at $10,000 and migrations at $2,500, fixed price. See pricing or the website cost calculator.
