Recharge
Recharge integration
Recharge runs subscriptions on Shopify: subscribe-and-save, prepaid boxes, bundles and a customer portal where shoppers skip, swap and pause. It uses Shopify’s native checkout on Shopify and Plus; on Hydrogen we build the portal and selling plans through the API.

SETUP BY PLATFORM
How we set up Recharge
Shopify
Recharge installs as a Shopify app and uses Shopify’s checkout and selling plans. We configure plans, style the widget to the theme and set up the customer portal.
Shopify Plus
Everything in Shopify, plus Checkout Extensibility blocks for upsells and Functions for subscriber-only discounts.
Shopify Plus →Hydrogen
On a headless storefront we build the subscribe widget and portal in React on Recharge’s API, with selling plans passed to Shopify’s checkout.
USE CASES
What teams use it for
Subscribe & save
A discount for the recurring order, shown as the default on the PDP.
Prepaid boxes & bundles
Curated boxes and build-your-own bundles with prepaid options.
Retention & dunning
Skip, swap, pause in the portal, failed-payment recovery and cancel-save offers.

What to watch out for
CHURN
Month-2 churn decides the economics
Most subscribers who leave do so after the second box. We build skip-a-month, reminders and frequency changes before launch.
COST
Platform fee plus a per-transaction cut
Recharge charges a monthly fee plus a percentage of subscription revenue. We model it against Shopify Subscriptions before you commit.
DATA
Migrating subscribers is delicate
Moving from another subscription app means migrating payment tokens and next-charge dates. We test on a subset first and tell customers before anything changes.

Recharge on Shopify, in practice
Recharge runs subscriptions through Shopify's native subscription APIs, so the subscription contract, billing and checkout stay inside Shopify and Recharge manages the schedule, the customer portal and the retention tooling.
What we build around it is the part the app does not do: the product page that explains the offer clearly (one-time versus subscribe-and-save, prepaid versus pay-as-you-go), the bundle builder, the customer portal styled to the theme, and the dunning and cancellation flows that recover a surprising share of churn. Email and SMS for upcoming charges, skipped orders and failed payments run through Spoks or Klaviyo using Recharge's events.
Common problems on stores that come to us: subscriptions sold on a theme that does not show the saving, portal links buried in account pages, and migration from an older Recharge checkout to the native Shopify one left half-done. We audit the contract data first, then move everything to the native checkout so Shop Pay and checkout extensibility work.
