What AI search means for Shopify SEO

Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT shopping and Perplexity now answer the question before the shopper reaches a results page. For Shopify stores that means fewer informational clicks and a new place to be recommended: inside the answer.

This is what we have changed in our SEO work for Shopify brands over the last year, and what it has done to traffic.

TL;DR

  • •
Informational traffic is down 20–40% on most stores; product and brand queries are flat.
  • •
AI assistants cite pages with clear entities, specific numbers and structured data.
  • •
Collections and buying guides are the pages that get cited, not blog listicles.
  • •
Measure citations, not just rankings: ask the assistants your own buyer questions monthly.

Where the clicks went

Across the Shopify stores we run SEO for, informational queries lost a fifth to two fifths of their clicks in twelve months. Transactional queries held. The traffic did not disappear; it stopped at the answer.

That changes what a store should publish. A 2,000-word guide that used to rank now gets summarised. A collection page with the right structure gets cited.

  • •
    Informational: −20% to −40% clicks.
  • •
Brand and product: flat to +5%.
  • •
Citations in AI answers: from zero to measurable.

What AI assistants actually read

They read what Google reads, with a stronger preference for plain statements and structured data. A collection page that says what it sells, for whom, at what price, with product schema and real reviews, gets cited. A page that buries that under lifestyle copy does not.

Entities matter: your brand, your product names and the category words should appear together, consistently, across the store and the places that link to it.

The AEO checklist for a store

  1. 1.
Product schema with price, availability and review ratings on every PDP.
  2. 2.
A one-paragraph answer at the top of every collection and guide.
  3. 3.
FAQ blocks that answer the questions shoppers actually ask the assistants.
  4. 4.
Brand entity: consistent name, description and sameAs links everywhere.

Frequently asked

Does AEO replace SEO for Shopify?
No. AEO builds on SEO: AI assistants still rely on pages that are well structured, crawlable and clear. It adds a focus on being the page they cite.
How do we know if ChatGPT recommends our store?
Ask the assistants the questions your customers ask and track whether your store is cited, and check referral traffic from AI tools in your analytics. Our SEO & AEO checker is a quick start.
Should we block AI crawlers?
Usually not. Blocking them keeps your store out of the answers your customers now read. Block selectively only if you have a specific reason.
