Platform comparison
Hydrogen vs Next.js, for a headless Shopify storefront.
Both can build a custom storefront on the Shopify Storefront API. Hydrogen is Shopify’s own React framework with Oxygen hosting; Next.js is the general-purpose React framework. The right choice depends on your team, your hosting and how much of the site is not a store.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT
Hydrogen vs Next.js
Short answer: choose Hydrogen if the storefront is the product and you want Shopify’s commerce components, cart, analytics and free hosting out of the box. Choose Next.js if you already run Next.js, need the storefront inside a larger application, or want to host on Vercel.

Quick quiz
Which one is right for your team?
Five questions, about a minute. Scored against this page’s own comparison of Hydrogen and Next.js.
Why go headless at all?
The reason the theme layer is not enough.
Comparison at a glance
So, which one should you choose?
The choice usually comes down to one question: is the storefront the whole product, or one part of a bigger application?
Hydrogen
is usually better if:
The storefront is the product. You want cart, accounts, analytics and hosting handled by Shopify, and a small team to own the code.
Best for storefrontsNext.js
is usually better if:
The store lives inside a larger application, your team already runs Next.js on Vercel, or you need routing and rendering features Hydrogen does not have.
Best for apps with a storeAstro instead
is usually better if:
Most pages are content and the store is simple. An Astro storefront on the Storefront API ships less JavaScript than either and hosts anywhere for free.
Best for content-led storesStill unsure?
We build on both. Send us your site and your team’s shape and a senior tells you which one, and why, within one business day.
Year-one cost
What the first year costs on each, side by side.
One typical setup, priced the same way for both: a new headless storefront with 200 products, a blog and three people editing it.
Plans billed annually, in USD · approximate, as of October 2026
Our work costs the same on either framework. Hydrogen saves the hosting line because Oxygen is included with Shopify; a Next.js storefront on Vercel pays per seat and for usage. Prices read from vendor pages on 24 October 2026.
AGENTIC WEBSITES
How AI agents work on each one.
Both are plain files in a repo, so coding agents work on both. Hydrogen gives an agent fewer decisions to get wrong.
A normal day on Hydrogen
An agent adds a bundle builder route using the cart API and Shopify components, opens a PR, and Oxygen builds a preview.
A normal day on Next.js
The same task, plus cache strategy, server and client boundaries and the cart state model you designed. Capable agents manage it; reviews take longer.
Production safety
Both go through pull requests and preview deploys. Hydrogen’s skeleton and Shopify’s defaults make mistakes rarer.
AT A GLANCE
Hydrogen
Next.js
Built-in agent support
Hydrogen CLI, skeleton and Shopify docs written for coding agents
Standard dev server; tooling via Vercel and the ecosystem
Outside agents
Any coding agent: Claude Code, Cursor, Codex
Any coding agent; excellent React coverage
What agents can edit
Everything in the repo; Shopify data through the Admin API

Review and rollback
Pull request, Oxygen preview, instant rollback
Pull request, Vercel preview, instant rollback
For an agent-maintained storefront Hydrogen is simpler. If the storefront is part of a larger Next.js product, agents handle Next.js well with a good review process.

7 questions
Do we even need headless?
Often not. Online Store 2.0 themes are fast and flexible; headless pays off for highly custom experiences, big content programmes or storefronts inside apps. We tell you honestly on the call.
Is Hydrogen only for Shopify Plus?
No. Hydrogen and Oxygen hosting are available on paid Shopify plans, not only Plus. Plus mainly matters if you also need checkout customisation, B2B or the volume pricing that comes with it.
Can we use Next.js with Shopify?
Yes. Next.js can build a full storefront on the Shopify Storefront API, with checkout still handled by Shopify. It is a good fit when the store lives inside a larger Next.js site or app.
Which is faster?
Both can be very fast; speed comes down to how the storefront is built, cached and hosted rather than the framework name. Hydrogen on Oxygen is tuned for Shopify data out of the box, while Next.js on Vercel gives more caching options to configure.
What happens to checkout?
Nothing changes for the customer: both hand off to Shopify's hosted checkout, so Shop Pay and your payment settings keep working. Customising checkout itself is done through Checkout Extensibility, the same as on a theme store.
Can you migrate from a theme to headless, or back?
Yes, in both directions. Products, customers and orders stay in Shopify, so a move between a theme and a headless storefront is a front-end rebuild plus a redirect map, not a data migration.
Can Creative Labs build in both?
Yes. We build headless storefronts on Hydrogen and on Next.js and recommend one based on your team and hosting. See headless Shopify for how a build runs.
