Core Web Vitals for Shopify themes: what actually moves the score

Summarize with AI
Shopify’s hosting is fast; most slow stores are slow because of the theme and the apps on it. Core Web Vitals are the three numbers Google and shoppers both feel, and they are fixable without a rebuild.
This is the checklist we run in a speed sprint, in the order that moves the numbers.
TL;DR
- •Use CrUX field data; Lighthouse on a laptop is not what Google ranks.
- •LCP is the hero image or the product image; make it load first and small.
- •INP is apps: deferring third-party scripts fixes most of it.
- •CLS is fonts and lazy sections; reserve the space.
Measure field data, not Lighthouse
The Chrome UX Report (CrUX) is real visitors on real phones, and it is what Search Console reports. Lighthouse is a simulation on your laptop. Start with CrUX for the PDP and collection templates, and set the target there: LCP under 2.5s, INP under 200ms, CLS under 0.1.
Hush went from a 41 Lighthouse score to 92, but the number that mattered was mobile LCP from 4.1s to 1.9s in the field.
- •PageSpeed Insights: the field data panel is the one to read.
- •Measure per template, not per store.
- •Baseline before any change; one change at a time.
What makes a theme slow
The hero image at 3 MB. Fonts loaded from three places. Twelve apps each injecting a script on every page. A reviews widget that renders client-side. Lazy-loading the one image that should load first.
None of these need a new theme. They need someone to measure, remove and reorder.

- 1.LCP: preload the hero image, serve it at the right size in AVIF or WebP.
- 2.INP: defer app scripts until interaction; render reviews from metafields.
- 3.CLS: self-host fonts with font-display swap; reserve height for lazy sections.
- 4.Keep it: Lighthouse and bundle budgets in CI so the next app doesn’t undo it.
