Vercel on Shopify, in practice
Vercel is where our Next.js storefronts run: Shopify as the commerce backend through the Storefront API, Next.js for the storefront, and Vercel for hosting, edge rendering, image optimization and preview deployments.
We start from Vercel's Next.js Commerce patterns and adapt them to the brand: server components for product and collection pages, streaming for fast first paint, the cart in a server action, and checkout handed to Shopify so Shop Pay, discounts and checkout extensibility keep working. Analytics and speed insights run on Vercel; PostHog or GA4 handles behaviour; Sanity or Storyblok handles editorial.
Next.js on Vercel is the right choice when a brand needs more than a theme can do — custom configurators, logged-in B2B experiences, multi-brand storefronts, or a site that is as much content as commerce. For most stores a theme is the better answer, and we say so in the audit rather than selling a rebuild.
Vercel or Oxygen for Hydrogen?
Oxygen hosts Hydrogen free on most plans, while Vercel adds flexibility at a cost. We weigh that against what the storefront needs.
Does Vercel host Shopify themes?
No. Vercel is for headless builds only: the Next.js, Astro and Hydrogen storefronts we build, with Shopify as the commerce backend and checkout.
How do we keep prices fresh with ISR?
We revalidate from Shopify webhooks, so cached product pages update when Shopify data changes. Stale product data means wrong prices, so we do not leave it to chance.
What does Vercel cost at scale?
Usage is metered beyond Pro: bandwidth, functions and image optimisation. We set budgets, and we weigh Oxygen, which hosts Hydrogen free on most plans, against Vercel's flexibility.
