GLOSSARY · A
A/B testing
Showing two versions of a page to split traffic and measuring which converts better.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters for a Shopify store.
Opinions about a product page are cheap; a test shows which version actually sells more. Conversion rate optimisation without testing is guesswork with a design budget.
Shopify stores rarely have the traffic for dozens of tests a month, so choosing what to test — and running each test long enough — matters more than the tool.
HOW CREATIVE LABS HANDLES IT
What we do about it on every project.
01
Start from data, not ideas
Analytics, heatmaps and session recordings show where people drop off; the hypothesis comes from there.
02
Size the test first
We estimate the traffic and run time needed to detect a real difference before launching, so tests aren't called early.
03
Test one meaningful change
A new PDP layout, a shipping message or an offer — not a button colour on a page nobody reaches.
EXAMPLE
A typical example.
A store wants to know whether showing delivery dates on the product page lifts add-to-cart.
Half of visitors see the estimated delivery date under the price, half don't; the test runs for full weeks to cover weekday and weekend buyers, and the result decides whether the change ships.
COMMON MISTAKES
What usually goes wrong.
Stopping when it looks good
Early results swing. Decide the run time up front and stick to it.
Testing on too little traffic
Low-traffic pages need bigger changes or longer tests to show anything real.
Ignoring revenue
A variant can win on conversion rate and lose on order value. Track both.
A/B TESTING
2 questions
How long should an A/B test run?
At least one full business cycle — usually two weeks or more — and until the planned sample size is reached.
Can I A/B test a Shopify theme?
Yes. Testing apps split traffic between theme versions or page variants; for headless stores the test runs in the storefront code.
