GLOSSARY · A
AOV (average order value)
Revenue divided by orders. Bundles, free-shipping thresholds and upsells move it.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters for a Shopify store.
Revenue is visitors × conversion rate × AOV. Raising order value is often easier than finding more traffic, and it improves the economics of every paid channel.
On Shopify, AOV moves with bundles, free-shipping thresholds, upsells in cart and post-purchase offers — each needs testing, because some lift order value while lowering conversion.
HOW CREATIVE LABS HANDLES IT
What we do about it on every project.
01
Set thresholds from real data
Free-shipping thresholds sit just above the typical order, based on order history, not a round number.
03
Test offers against conversion
We judge every upsell on revenue per visitor, not AOV alone.
EXAMPLE
A typical example.
A skincare store's typical order is a single cleanser.
A three-step routine bundle on the product page and a free-shipping bar in the cart give shoppers a reason to add a second item, and revenue per visitor is used to judge the change.
COMMON MISTAKES
What usually goes wrong.
Optimising AOV in isolation
A pushy upsell can raise AOV and cut orders. Watch revenue per visitor.
Too many offers at once
Cart drawers full of upsells slow checkout and distract from paying.
Ignoring returns
Bundles that drive returns don't raise real order value.
AOV
2 questions
How do I calculate AOV?
Total revenue divided by number of orders for the same period. Shopify Analytics reports it directly.
What raises AOV fastest?
Usually a well-placed free-shipping threshold and relevant bundles. Test both against conversion rate.
