Platform comparison
Next.js vs WordPress, compared for brands that sell.
One is an application framework, the other is a content management system. They solve different problems, which is exactly why teams end up comparing them when the site needs to be both.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT
Next.js vs WordPress
Short answer: choose Next.js when the site is really a product — accounts, dashboards, personalised storefronts. Choose WordPress for publishing by a large editorial team. Many teams keep WordPress as a headless CMS and build the front end in Next.js.

Quick quiz
Which one is right for your team?
Five questions, about a minute. Scored against this page’s own comparison of Next.js and WordPress.
What is most of the site?
Pages people read vs screens people use.
Comparison at a glance
So, which one should you choose?
The choice usually comes down to whether the site is a product or a publication — and whether you have engineers to own an application.
Next.js
is usually better if:
The site is an application: accounts, dashboards, personalised storefronts and real interactivity, built and owned by a React team.
Best for productsWordPress
is usually better if:
You publish a lot, have a large editorial team that knows WordPress, or rely on plugins that would be costly to replace.
Best for editorial teamsHeadless WordPress
is usually better if:
Your editors stay in WordPress, your front end is Next.js (or Astro). The most common answer when a publication becomes a product.
Best of bothWe build on both. Send us your site and your team’s shape and a senior tells you which one, and why, within one business day.

Year-one cost
What the first year costs on each, side by side.
One typical setup, priced the same way for both: a new 30-page marketing site with a blog, three people editing it.
Plans billed annually, in USD · approximate, as of October 2026
Our work costs the same on either platform. The platform line differs by hosting model: per-seat and usage on Vercel against a flat managed WordPress plan. Prices read from vendor pages on 24 October 2026.
AGENTIC WEBSITES
How AI agents work on each one.
Next.js is code an agent can read and change end to end. WordPress now has AI in core, but agents reach only what a developer has registered.
A normal day on Next.js
An agent builds a pricing page from a brief, wires it to the CMS and opens a pull request with a preview deploy.
What WordPress agents reach
Posts, media and whatever abilities a developer exposes through the Abilities API and MCP Adapter. Themes and templates rarely.
Production safety
A WordPress agent edits the live admin with per-post revisions. On Next.js it proposes, a person reviews, and rollback is a redeploy.
AT A GLANCE
Next.js
WordPress
Built-in AI
None needed: the repo is plain files
AI client and Connectors screen in core (7.0)
Outside agents
Any coding agent: Claude Code, Cursor, Codex
Abilities exposed by the MCP Adapter plugin
What agents can edit
Everything: components, styles, content, routes
Only actions a developer has registered
Review and rollback
Pull request, preview deploy, instant rollback
Goes live from the admin, with per-post revisions
For agent-built sites Next.js is the better base. WordPress is improving quickly for content tasks, and headless WordPress with a Next.js front end gives editors both.

7 questions
Is Next.js better than WordPress?
For an application, yes. For a publication run by editors, no. Most comparisons are really about a marketing site, where either works and the team decides.
Can marketers edit a Next.js site?
Yes, when it is connected to a headless CMS. Next.js has no editor of its own, so we pair it with a CMS like Sanity or headless WordPress and marketers edit there.
Can we keep WordPress and use Next.js?
Yes. Headless WordPress keeps the editor your team knows and uses Next.js for the front end. It is a common way to modernise a site without retraining editors.
Is Next.js good for SEO?
Yes, done right. Next.js gives full control of rendering, metadata and structured data, and server-rendered pages are easy for search engines to read. The SEO work is the same as anywhere: content, structure, speed and links.
How do AI agents edit each one?
On Next.js, code and content can live in git, so an agent proposes changes as a pull request someone reviews. On WordPress, agents work through the admin or REST API. Both work; git-based changes are easier to review and roll back.
Which is cheaper?
WordPress is usually cheaper to start with a theme; Next.js costs more to build but less to keep patched and fast. The right number depends on scope, so use the website cost calculator or our pricing page.
Can Creative Labs build in both?
Yes. We build in Next.js and work on WordPress sites, including headless WordPress with a Next.js front end, and recommend whichever fits who edits the site.
