Platform comparison
Astro vs Next.js, compared for brands that sell.
Both are modern, code-first and fast. Astro is static-first and ships almost no JavaScript; Next.js is an application framework. The right choice depends on how much of your site is content and how much is product.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT
Astro vs Next.js
Short answer: choose Astro for marketing sites, content and most headless storefronts. Choose Next.js when the site is really an application — accounts, dashboards, personalisation and heavy interactivity on most pages.

Quick quiz
Which one is right for your team?
Five questions, about a minute. Scored against this page’s own comparison of Astro and Next.js.
What is most of the site?
Pages people read vs screens people use.
Comparison at a glance
So, which one should you choose?
The choice usually comes down to one question: is this a site with some app in it, or an app with some site in it?
Astro
is usually better if:
Most pages are content or catalog, you want the fastest possible pages with the least JavaScript, and edits come through a CMS or an agent.
Best for sitesNext.js
is usually better if:
The site is an application: accounts, dashboards, personalised storefronts and interactivity on most pages, built by a React team.
Best for appsBoth
is usually better if:
A marketing site and docs on Astro, the logged-in product on Next.js, sharing a design system. The most common setup we ship for product companies.
Best for product companiesStill unsure?
We build on both. Send us your site and your team’s shape and a senior tells you which one, and why, within one business day.
Year-one cost
What the first year costs on each, side by side.
One typical setup, priced the same way for both: a new 30-page marketing site with a blog and a headless storefront, three people editing it.
Plans billed annually, in USD · approximate, as of October 2026
Our work costs the same on either framework. The platform line differs mostly by hosting: static files are free almost anywhere, while a Next.js app on Vercel Pro pays per seat and for function usage. Prices read from vendor pages on 24 October 2026.
AGENTIC WEBSITES
How AI agents work on each one.
Both are plain files in a repo, so coding agents work on both. The difference is how much an agent has to understand before a change is safe.
A normal day on Astro
An agent adds a collection page, writes the content and opens a PR. Static output means the preview is the final result.
A normal day on Next.js
The same task, plus caching, server vs client boundaries and route handlers to reason about. Capable agents manage it; reviews take longer.
Production safety
Both go through pull requests and preview deploys. Astro’s smaller surface makes mistakes rarer and rollbacks simpler.
AT A GLANCE
Astro
Next.js
Built-in agent support
Background dev server, JSON logs and agent detection since 7.0
Standard dev server; tooling via Vercel and the ecosystem
Outside agents

Review and rollback

Pull request, preview deploy, instant rollback
For agent-edited marketing sites Astro is simpler. For an application, Next.js is the right tool and agents handle it well with a good review process.

7 questions
Is Astro faster than Next.js?
For content pages, yes by default: Astro ships zero JavaScript unless you add an island. Next.js can be just as fast with discipline.
Can Astro do what Next.js does?
Mostly, for content. Astro renders pages to static HTML and adds interactive islands where needed, so it covers marketing sites, docs and most storefront pages. Logged-in dashboards, heavy personalisation and app-like flows are where Next.js is the better fit.
Can we use React in Astro?
Yes. Astro can render React components as islands, so existing React pieces such as a product configurator or a search widget can sit on otherwise static pages. Only the islands ship JavaScript; the rest of the page stays HTML.
Which should a Shopify brand pick for headless?
It depends on how much of the site is content and how much is product. Content-led brands with a catalogue that changes slowly do well on Astro; storefronts with accounts, personalisation or a lot of interactivity fit Next.js or Hydrogen. We recommend one after looking at the store, not before.
Do we have to host on Vercel?
No. Both deploy to Vercel, Netlify, Cloudflare and other hosts; Vercel is a natural fit for Next.js, but it is a choice, not a requirement. We pick hosting with you and set it up in your own account.
Can you migrate between them?
Yes. Both use components and pull content from the same CMS or the Shopify Storefront API, so a move is mostly rebuilding templates rather than re-entering content. We map every URL first so rankings carry over.
Can Creative Labs build in both?
Yes. We build marketing sites and headless storefronts in both, and we recommend whichever fits how your team edits and what the site has to do. See Next.js development for how we work.
