SETUP BY PLATFORM
How we set up Storybook
Shopify
Storybook on Shopify (Theme sections): Document every storefront component with its states and props, run visual regression tests, and keep design and code in sync.
Shopify store builds →Shopify Plus
On Shopify Plus (Theme sections): everything in Shopify, plus the Plus-only hooks (checkout extensions, B2B, Launchpad) where Storybook can use them.
Hydrogen
On a headless storefront (Hydrogen, Astro or Next.js) we connect Storybook through Native and own the event and data mapping ourselves.
USE CASES
What teams use it for
Component library
Buttons, cards, forms and sections documented with props and states.
Visual regression
Snapshot tests catch unintended changes before deploy.
Design parity
Figma components mapped to code components one to one.
BEFORE YOU ADD IT
What to watch out for
SCOPE
Overkill for small themes
A five-section theme does not need Storybook. Large or headless builds do.
MAINTENANCE
Stories go stale
Stories live beside components and update in the same PR.
HOSTING
Publish it
A deployed Storybook is the shared reference for everyone.
05
Storybook on headless builds
Storybook is the component workshop we use on Hydrogen, Astro and Next.js storefronts: every section and UI component is built and reviewed in isolation before it is placed on a page.
It gives the client a living catalog of the storefront's building blocks — product cards, cart drawer, PDP gallery, promo bars — with every state visible: loading, empty, error, sold out, on sale. Designers check it against Figma, QA tests each state once instead of hunting for it across pages, and new developers learn the system in an afternoon.
On theme-based Shopify stores we do not use it; the theme editor and section schema serve the same purpose. Storybook is part of our headless standard because those storefronts live for years and are edited by people who were not on the original build; the catalog is what keeps the design system from drifting.
Do we need Storybook for a Shopify theme?
No. We do not use it on theme-based Shopify stores, because the theme editor and section schema serve the same purpose. A five-section theme does not need it; large or headless builds do.
Does Storybook work with Hydrogen?
Yes. It is the component workshop we use on Hydrogen, Astro and Next.js storefronts, where every section is built and reviewed in isolation before it goes on a page.
Who maintains the stories?
Stories live beside the components and update in the same pull request, so they do not go stale. A deployed Storybook is the shared reference for everyone.
Can designers use it?
Yes. Designers check the catalog against Figma, with components mapped to code one to one, and every state is visible: loading, empty, error, sold out and on sale.
