Hotjar
Hotjar integration
Hotjar shows you what shoppers do on a page. We use heatmaps, recordings and surveys to decide what to test, not to guess.

SETUP BY PLATFORM
How we set up Hotjar
Shopify
Hotjar on Shopify (Theme/GTM): Install Hotjar, set up heatmaps and recordings on product, collection and cart pages, add surveys where shoppers drop, and feed findings into CRO tests.
Shopify Plus
On Shopify Plus (Theme + checkout): everything in Shopify, plus the Plus-only hooks (checkout extensions, B2B, Launchpad) where Hotjar can use them.
Hydrogen
On a headless storefront (Hydrogen, Astro or Next.js) we connect Hotjar through Script and own the event and data mapping ourselves.
USE CASES
What teams use it for
Heatmaps
Click, scroll and move maps on PDP and collection templates.
Session recordings
Watch real sessions around drop-off points on mobile.
Exit surveys
Ask why shoppers leave the cart, then fix the top reason.
BEFORE YOU ADD IT
What to watch out for
PRIVACY
Mask personal data
Recordings must mask inputs. We configure suppression before go-live.
SPEED
Sample, do not record everything
Record a sample of sessions to limit script impact.
CHECKOUT
No recordings in checkout
Shopify checkout does not allow recording scripts.
05
Hotjar on Shopify, in practice
Hotjar shows how people actually use the store — heatmaps, session recordings and on-page surveys — which is the evidence a CRO sprint starts from and the thing a GA4 funnel cannot show.
We install it through the theme with sampling set so it records enough sessions to be useful without slowing the page, mask checkout and personal fields, and set up recordings filtered to the behaviours we want to study: mobile users who added to cart and left, visitors who used search, sessions on the product page longer than a minute. A one-question exit survey on the cart page usually explains more than a week of recordings.
Hotjar earns its subscription during a sprint and sits idle the rest of the year, so we often run it for a month, pull the findings, and pause it. Stores that want continuous product analytics with event data rather than video use PostHog or Microsoft Clarity instead; the choice depends on whether the question is 'what happened' or 'why'.
Does Hotjar work on Shopify checkout?
No. Shopify checkout does not allow recording scripts. We record product, collection and cart pages instead, and mask personal fields before go-live.
Will Hotjar slow down my store?
We install it through the theme with sampling set, so it records enough sessions to be useful without slowing the page. Recording a sample, not every session, limits the script's impact.
How many sessions should we record?
A sample, not everything. We set sampling to record enough sessions to be useful, filtered to behaviours worth studying, such as mobile users who added to cart and left.
Is Microsoft Clarity a free alternative?
Clarity is an alternative for continuous behaviour tracking. Hotjar earns its subscription during a sprint that needs surveys, and the choice depends on whether the question is what happened or why.
