Google Tag Manager

Google Tag Manager integration

Tag Manager keeps every pixel in one container with a data layer underneath. We use it to stop the theme filling up with scripts that slow the store down.

USE CASES

What teams use it for

01

Single container

Meta, Google Ads, TikTok and Pinterest pixels managed in one place.

02

Data layer

Product, cart and customer data exposed consistently to every tag.

03

Server-side tagging

First-party server container for ad platforms when accuracy and speed matter.

BEFORE YOU ADD IT

What to watch out for

SPEED

Tags are still scripts

GTM makes tags easy to add, which is how stores end up with 40 of them. We review the container quarterly.

CHECKOUT

Checkout runs in a sandbox

Checkout tags go through a Shopify custom pixel, not the theme container.

GOVERNANCE

Publish rights

Anyone with publish rights can break tracking. Use workspaces and versions.

05

Google Tag Manager on Shopify, in practice

GTM is how a store adds marketing tags without editing the theme every time, and on Shopify it has two homes: the theme for storefront pages and the Customer Events pixel for checkout and the thank-you page.

We build a data layer that fires consistent ecommerce events — view item, add to cart, begin checkout, purchase — from the theme and the pixel, then configure GA4, Google Ads, Meta and any other tag to read from that one data layer rather than each scraping the page. Consent Mode is wired to the store's cookie banner so tags respect the visitor's choice and EU traffic stays compliant.

The cost of GTM is page speed when it becomes a dumping ground. We review the container quarterly, remove tags for tools the store no longer uses, and set triggers so heavy scripts load after interaction. A container with eight working tags beats one with forty that nobody owns.

Can GTM run in Shopify checkout?

Not through the theme container. Checkout runs in a sandbox, so checkout tags go through a Shopify custom pixel. We set up one GTM container for the storefront and a custom pixel for checkout.

Will GTM slow my store down?

Tags are still scripts, and a container can turn into a dumping ground. We review it quarterly, remove tags for tools you no longer use and set triggers so heavy scripts load after interaction.

Should we use server-side tagging?

Server-side tagging gives ad platforms a first-party server container, and it suits stores where accuracy and speed matter. We start with a clean container and data layer, then recommend server-side where it earns its place.

Who should own the container?

Someone on your team should own it, because anyone with publish rights can break tracking. We use workspaces and versions and review the container quarterly. A container with eight working tags beats forty nobody owns.
