How we set up Contentful
Shopify
Contentful on Shopify (App): Model content types, connect the Shopify app for product references, build pages for the storefront and set up roles, locales and workflows.
Shopify store builds →Shopify Plus
On Shopify Plus (App): everything in Shopify, plus the Plus-only hooks (checkout extensions, B2B, Launchpad) where Contentful can use them.
Hydrogen
On a headless storefront (Hydrogen, Astro or Next.js) we connect Contentful through Native and own the event and data mapping ourselves.

BEFORE YOU ADD IT
What to watch out for
COST
Enterprise pricing
Contentful is priced for teams. Smaller brands are better served by Sanity or Storyblok.
MODELLING
Content types are rigid
Changing a type later is slow. Model carefully.
PREVIEW
Preview needs setup
Live preview is not automatic on custom storefronts.

Contentful on Shopify, in practice
Contentful is an enterprise headless CMS, and it shows up on Shopify projects when a brand already runs a marketing site or multiple regional sites in it and wants the store to share the same content and brand governance.
We connect Contentful to a Hydrogen or Next.js storefront, model the content types that touch commerce — campaign pages, product stories, size and care guides, store finders — and link entries to Shopify products through the Shopify app for Contentful so editors pick products from the live catalog. Localization lives in Contentful; prices and markets live in Shopify Markets; the storefront composes both.
It is a heavier tool than Sanity or Storyblok and priced accordingly, so we recommend it only when the brand is already invested or needs its workflow and permission model. On theme-based stores we do not add it; metaobjects or a lighter CMS get the same result at a fraction of the cost.
Contentful or Sanity?
Contentful is heavier and priced for teams, so we recommend it only when a brand is already invested or needs its workflow and permission model. Smaller brands are better served by Sanity or Storyblok.
Does Contentful integrate with Shopify?
Yes. We link entries to Shopify products through the Shopify app for Contentful, so editors pick products from the live catalog.
Can Contentful handle multiple languages?
Yes. Localization lives in Contentful, with locales and fallbacks matched to Shopify Markets. Prices and markets stay in Shopify, and the storefront composes both.
How long does a Contentful build take?
Typically 2–4 weeks. That covers modelling content types, connecting the Shopify app, building storefront pages and setting up roles, locales and workflows. Live preview on a custom storefront needs its own setup.
