GLOSSARY · L
Liquid
Shopify’s templating language, used in every theme.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters for a Shopify store.
Liquid is the template language behind every Shopify theme. It decides how products, collections and content are rendered into HTML.
Clean Liquid keeps a theme fast and editable; tangled Liquid with app leftovers is a common cause of slow pages and fragile theme development.
HOW CREATIVE LABS HANDLES IT
What we do about it on every project.
01
Build with sections and blocks
Logic lives in reusable sections so merchants can edit without code.
02
Keep templates lean
No unnecessary loops, includes or inline scripts that slow rendering.
03
Review app code
Leftover snippets from uninstalled apps are found and removed.
EXAMPLE
A typical example.
A product template loops over every product in a collection to show a few "related" items.
The loop is replaced with Shopify's product recommendations, which cuts render time and shows better matches.
COMMON MISTAKES
What usually goes wrong.
Editing a live theme
Always work on a duplicate or through version control.
Hard-coding content
Text and images in Liquid instead of settings mean every change needs a developer.
Ignoring leftovers
Uninstalled apps often leave Liquid snippets behind.
LIQUID
2 questions
Is Liquid a programming language?
It's a template language: it has logic and loops but runs only to render pages, not as a general programming language.
Do I need Liquid for a headless store?
No. Headless storefronts use the Storefront API and their own framework instead of Liquid themes.
