GLOSSARY · T
Theme editor
The visual customiser merchants use to change sections and settings.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters for a Shopify store.
The theme editor is where merchants customise their store visually — adding sections, changing settings and previewing changes before publishing.
A well-built theme makes the editor powerful but safe; a poorly built one either locks the team out or lets small edits break layouts, which is why theme development designs for it.
HOW CREATIVE LABS HANDLES IT
What we do about it on every project.
01
Design settings for editors
Clear labels and sensible defaults so changes look right first time.
02
Limit risky options
Settings that break layouts or performance are left out.
03
Train the team
A short walkthrough so the team can launch pages on their own.
EXAMPLE
A typical example.
A merchandiser wants to change homepage collections for a sale.
In the theme editor they swap the featured collections, preview on mobile and publish, with no developer involved.
COMMON MISTAKES
What usually goes wrong.
Editing the live theme without a backup
Duplicate the theme or use versions before large changes.
Settings overload
Too many options make good results harder.
Hard-coded content
Text in code can't be changed in the editor.

2 questions
Can I preview changes before publishing?
Yes. The theme editor previews changes, and you can work on an unpublished duplicate theme.
Can multiple people edit the theme at once?
Several staff can access it, but simultaneous edits to the same theme can overwrite each other; coordinate changes.
