GLOSSARY · C
Core Web Vitals
Google’s three user-experience metrics — Largest Contentful Paint (loading), Interaction to Next Paint (responsiveness) and Cumulative Layout Shift (stability) — measured on real visitors and used as a ranking signal.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters for a Shopify store.
Shopify themes start fast and get slow: every app adds a script, every hero adds an image, every “quick” tracking pixel adds a request. Most stores we audit fail LCP on mobile, which is where the majority of their traffic is.
Failing Core Web Vitals costs twice. Google weighs it in rankings, and slow product pages convert worse — the same visitors, fewer orders. Field data from the Chrome UX Report is what counts, not a one-off Lighthouse run on a laptop.
HOW CREATIVE LABS HANDLES IT
What we do about it on every project.
01
Measure with field data first
We read CrUX and Search Console, not just Lighthouse, so we fix what real visitors on real phones experience.
02
Cut app weight
Unused apps are removed; the rest load after interaction. This alone fixes most LCP failures.
03
Fix images and fonts
Responsive images, preloaded hero assets, self-hosted fonts and explicit dimensions to stop layout shift.
04
Rewrite heavy sections
Sliders, mega menus and video heroes are rebuilt as lean sections that still look the part.
05
Guard it after launch
A speed budget in the theme, a monthly CrUX check and a rule: no new app without a measurement.
06
Report it plainly
A before/after per metric per template, in a Loom your whole team can follow.
EXAMPLE
A real example.
A Shopify Plus apparel store with 34 apps installed and a 6.1s mobile LCP on product pages.
Removing 11 apps, deferring the rest, replacing the hero slider and self-hosting fonts brought LCP to 2.2s and CLS to under 0.05 — measured in CrUX over the following 28 days, not on a laptop.
COMMON MISTAKES
What usually goes wrong.
Chasing a Lighthouse score
A lab score of 95 on desktop means little if CrUX shows mobile failing. Field data is what Google uses.
Installing a “speed app”
Most add a script to “optimise” the scripts already there. The fix is removing weight, not adding it.
Lazy-loading the hero image
The one image that should load first is the one most often deferred by a blanket lazy-load setting.

4 questions
What are good Core Web Vitals numbers?
LCP under 2.5s, INP under 200ms, CLS under 0.1 — at the 75th percentile of real visitors.
Does Shopify’s hosting make this easier?
It helps. Shopify's hosting and CDN are fast, but most slowness comes from themes, apps and images added on top, which is where the fixes are.
How long does a speed fix take?
A speed sprint typically takes about four weeks: measure field data, remove or defer apps, fix images and code, then measure again. Field data in the Chrome UX Report takes a few weeks to reflect the change.
Will it improve conversion?
Usually. Faster product pages tend to convert better, but how much depends on how slow the store was and where your traffic comes from. We measure conversion before and after rather than promising a number.
