GLOSSARY · S
SKU
Stock keeping unit: the identifier for each variant you sell.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters for a Shopify store.
A SKU (stock keeping unit) is the code you use to identify each variant you sell. Consistent SKUs make inventory, fulfilment, reporting and integrations work.
When SKUs are missing or duplicated, warehouses pick the wrong item and ERP or marketplace integrations fail.
HOW CREATIVE LABS HANDLES IT
What we do about it on every project.
01
Define a pattern
A readable, consistent SKU structure agreed with the warehouse.
02
Fill the gaps
Missing and duplicate SKUs are found and fixed during audits and migrations.
03
Use them as the join key
Integrations match products by SKU, so every variant needs a unique one.
EXAMPLE
A typical example.
A store adds new colours without SKUs, and the 3PL can't match orders.
Every variant gets a SKU following the agreed pattern, and the inventory sync with the 3PL starts matching orders correctly.
COMMON MISTAKES
What usually goes wrong.
Duplicate SKUs
Two variants with one SKU break syncs and reports.
Meaningless codes
Random strings make picking errors more likely.
Changing SKUs casually
Integrations and history depend on them.

2 questions
Is a SKU the same as a barcode?
No. A SKU is your internal code; a barcode (such as UPC or EAN) is a standard code used across retailers.
Does Shopify require SKUs?
No, but you should use them if you track inventory, use a warehouse or connect other systems.
