GLOSSARY · M

Metaobjects

Custom content types in Shopify, such as ingredients, stockists or FAQs.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters for a Shopify store.

Some content isn't a product or a page: ingredients, designers, stockists, size charts, FAQs. Metaobjects let you create these as structured content types inside Shopify.

Each entry is edited once and reused wherever it's referenced, which keeps content consistent across products and pages built with theme development.

HOW CREATIVE LABS HANDLES IT

What we do about it on every project.

01

Model the content

We define fields for each type — for example an ingredient's name, benefit and image.

02

Reference from products

Products link to entries through metafields, so one update changes every page.

03

Render with sections

Sections display entries consistently, with no hard-coded content.

EXAMPLE

A typical example.

A skincare brand repeats the same ingredient explanations across dozens of products.

Each ingredient becomes a metaobject entry, products reference the ones they contain, and editing an ingredient updates every product page at once.

COMMON MISTAKES

What usually goes wrong.

Using pages for structured content

Pages can't be referenced or filtered like entries.

Over-modelling

Not every list needs a content type; start with what repeats.

No editorial owner

Entries go stale without someone responsible for them.
