Metafields

Custom fields on products, collections, customers and orders — the way you extend Shopify’s data model.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters for a Shopify store.

Out of the box, a Shopify product has a title, description, price and a few standard fields. Metafields add the rest — materials, care instructions, specs, size charts — as structured data.

Structured data can be filtered, shown in the right place on the page and reused in schema markup, instead of living in one long description.

HOW CREATIVE LABS HANDLES IT

What we do about it on every project.

01

Define, don't improvise

Metafield definitions with types and validation, so data stays consistent.

02

Connect to the theme

Dynamic sources show metafields in sections without code changes.

03

Import in bulk

Existing data is migrated from descriptions or spreadsheets during migrations.

EXAMPLE

A typical example.

A footwear brand keeps materials and fit notes inside each product description.

They move into metafields, appear as consistent spec rows on every product page and power a filter by material on collection pages.

COMMON MISTAKES

What usually goes wrong.

Untyped metafields

Without definitions, data drifts and can't power filters.

Everything in the description

Long descriptions hide facts shoppers and search engines need.

Too many one-off fields

Plan the model; dozens of rarely used fields confuse editors.
