GLOSSARY · L

llms.txt

A plain-text file that tells AI crawlers what a site is about and which pages matter.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters for a Shopify store.

llms.txt is a proposed convention: a plain-text file at the root of a site that summarises what it is and links the pages that matter most, written for large language models.

It isn't a ranking factor and not every AI crawler reads it, but it's a cheap, low-risk way to point AI tools at your best content as part of AEO.

HOW CREATIVE LABS HANDLES IT

What we do about it on every project.

01

Write it for people too

A short description of the store, then links to key collections, guides and policies.

02

Serve it at the root

Shopify doesn't allow arbitrary root files, so it's served through a workaround such as an app proxy or redirect.

03

Keep it current

Updated when collections, policies or key content change.

EXAMPLE

A typical example.

A store wants AI tools to find its sizing guide and returns policy.

Its llms.txt describes the brand in two sentences and lists links to the main collections, the size guide, shipping and returns.

COMMON MISTAKES

What usually goes wrong.

Expecting rankings from it

It's a hint, not a ranking factor.

Dumping every URL

List the pages that matter; the sitemap already lists everything.

Letting it go stale

Broken links in llms.txt send crawlers to 404s.
