WooCommerce to Shopify Migration: What Your Agency Should Include

Moving from WooCommerce to Shopify is one of the highest-stakes projects an eCommerce brand undertakes. Done right, you gain a faster, more reliable storefront. Done wrong, you lose organic traffic, customer trust, and months of revenue.

The difference is almost always in what the agency includes — or skips. Here is the 11-point checklist we use at Creative Labs for every WooCommerce to Shopify migration.

1. Pre-migration SEO and traffic audit

Before touching a single file, your agency should audit your current store's organic performance — every indexed URL, which pages drive traffic, current ranking keywords, and Core Web Vitals benchmarks.

2. Complete URL mapping and 301 redirect plan

WooCommerce uses /product/blue-widget/. Shopify uses /products/blue-widget. Every URL with backlinks or rankings needs a 301 redirect. Your agency should deliver a complete redirect map before migration starts. We typically map 500–3,000 URLs per migration.

3. Product data migration with metafields

WooCommerce custom fields, ACF data, product variations — all need to translate into Shopify metafields. Your agency should preserve variant structures, pricing, full-resolution images, and downloadable product files.

4. Customer accounts and order history

Customers cannot use their WooCommerce password on Shopify. Your agency should migrate all customer records and order history, then trigger Shopify's account-invite flow. Losing order history is a trust-breaker.

5. SEO metadata preservation

Every meta title, description, and heading structure from Yoast or RankMath should be migrated — not regenerated from product names, which is what Shopify does by default.

6. Schema markup and structured data

Product, Offer, Review, and BreadcrumbList schema from WooCommerce should be implemented on the Shopify theme and validated before go-live. Creative Labs handles structured data as part of every migration SEO package.

7. Design rebuild, not a clone

Your agency should redesign the store for Shopify — taking the brand identity but building the UX natively in Shopify 2.0 sections. This is an opportunity to fix conversion issues, not reproduce them.

8. Third-party app and integration mapping

WooCommerce plugins do not have one-to-one Shopify equivalents. Your agency should audit every active plugin and map it to a Shopify app or native feature, handling data migration for each.

9. Pre-launch QA on a staging environment

Build on a dev store, migrate a sample of products and customers, and run full QA: every redirect, product pages, checkout flow, mobile responsiveness, page speed, and analytics tracking.

10. DNS cutover plan with zero downtime

Schedule the cutover during your lowest-traffic window, verify SSL on Shopify before the switch, monitor for 24–48 hours, and have a rollback plan.

11. Post-migration monitoring and recovery plan

Monitor Search Console for crawl errors, track rankings daily for two weeks, verify Google is indexing new URLs, submit the updated sitemap, and flag any traffic drops immediately.

What does a WooCommerce to Shopify migration cost?

At Creative Labs, WooCommerce migrations start at $8,000 (under 500 products, clean URLs) and range to $25,000–$40,000 for complex stores with thousands of SKUs and custom integrations. Full agency pricing is covered in our Shopify agency cost guide.
